Dia de los Muertos
The ”Day of the Dead” (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls’ Day) is a holiday focused on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 1st, the same day as the Catholic holiday of All Saints’ Day and is also related to All Souls’ Day which occurs on November 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Due to its time being close to Halloween, The “Day of the Dead” is commonly thought to be similar to Halloween.

‘Mexican Restaurant of the Year’ as voted for by you!
We’ve been named ‘Mexican Restaurant of the Year’ in the 2012/2013 Air Europa Latin UK Awards (LUKAS) after thousands of Londoners voted us through the first round and in to the second. Competing in our category against last year’s winner, Mestizo, and another three finalists, we scooped the award to become the 2013 winner.
The LUKAS celebrate the contribution of Britain’s one million Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese residents. Now in their second year after a hugely successful 2012, the awards saw a record number of votes registered throughout the three month voting period. The awards will be presented to winners at a glamorous Gala Ceremony taking place at Café de Paris in London on Monday 18th March.
The first Lupita restaurant, Lupita Central, came to London in 2010 after over 50 years as Mexico City’s leading taquería – El Farolito. Building on its success, we opened Lupita East in late 2012 bringing a fresh and vibrant restaurant along with a sultry subterranean Mezcalería, The Mayahuel Lounge, to east London.

Lupita East – the Mexico City restaurant – holds exclusive party to mark official opening of new Mezcalería
Authentic Mexican restaurant Lupita, officially opened the doors of its underground Mezcalería in November following the opening of its second London restaurant in Spitalfields.
Bringing classic Mexico City cuisine to the diverse food offering already available in East London, guests were delighted with the bite-size ‘Mexicanapés’, quenching cocktails and vibrant Mariachi band that added to the electrifying atmosphere and gave the evening a truly Mexican kick.
On Thursday 29th November, guests were invited to join the party at the newly designed Lupita East to enjoy Mexicanapé tasters from the authentic menu created by executive head chef, Marco Cuervo. Dishes served included Chicharron de Queso, Tacos Gobernador, Tostada Ceviche and Churros con Cajeta as well as fresh Guacamole Artisanal made at the table with a selection of Mexican drinks including proper Margaritas and Pacifico, a Pilsner-style Mexican beer also on offer.
Guests were invited down to the underground Mezcalería to pay chief mixologist Paulo Nunes a visit where he was offering tasters of authentic Mexican Mezcal, a slightly different tipple to the traditional Tequila with a smokier flavour due to being distilled in whiskey barrels.
Rafael Mondragon, owner and chief executive of Lupita comments, “It was brilliant to be able to show everyone the restaurant and Mezcalería. We have been working on the opening of Lupita East for the last 18 months and we are so happy that people can now taste the authentic Mexico City cuisine we are offering and see what we are trying to achieve by educating diners in what food is truly like in Mexico”.
Kent Bowen, owner and operations director added, “We’ve certainly opened Lupita East with a bang. The atmosphere was incredible and it was so great to see everyone having a good time. Opening our second restaurant was a huge step for us and in the coming 12 months we hope to bring the authentic Mexican dining experience, that we are all so passionate about, to many more people”.

The launch event matched the quality of the food – vibrant, fun and friendly. The cocktails were all delicious, and the Mexican band went down a storm.
